Nevada Needs Jobs, Not Lawsuits

As someone who has worked for a small Nevada business, I know what it takes to grow a business and try to provide the best opportunities for employees. As hard as we work and as much as we try to succeed, we’re always fighting the constant battle to avoid a lawsuit.

In Nevada, we live in a “sue-happy” environment where personal injury lawyer billboards litter our highways and businesses are targeted constantly with frivolous slip and fall lawsuits. Personal injury lawyers have a tight grip on the state and are making millions while people like me are just trying to hang on. Nevadans can’t let this abuse continue. We can’t let these greedy personal injury lawyers maintain their grip on our state.

In the past we’ve struggled with our legislature not taking action when it comes to legal reform. In 2013 they let a damaging bill get through, only to be stopped at the Governor’s desk. And in 2012, the Nevada Supreme Court vastly expanded premises liability, holding companies like ours responsible for people who ignore obvious dangers and get hurt. This kind of environment makes insurance costs increase for business owners, preventing them from being able to expand their business to provide more jobs or help our local community grow.

With the 2014 election quickly approaching and the next legislative session right behind it, it’s time for Nevada to turn a corner. We as citizens have to start fighting back against the personal injury lawyers and combat the burgeoning lawsuit economy. We need to tell our representatives to support smart legislation that creates a job-friendly environment, not a lawsuit-friendly one. I urge you to stand with me as I start fighting back and standing up for Nevada businesses. Nevada needs more jobs, not more lawsuits.
