Mark Cuban sets fine example

Texas

Guest post by Diane Davis, executive director, East Texans Against Lawsuit Abuse.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban’s decision to answer the call and serve on a jury is something that should be celebrated statewide. Jury duty is a sacred civic responsibility that all Texans should take seriously. The right to a trial by jury is a fundamental principle that Americans enjoy. Far too often, Texans shirk our own jury duty when summoned.

Texans Against Lawsuit Abuse (TALA), a statewide legal watchdog, released a study this summer highlighting the low response rates that Texas counties receive when issuing jury summons. In response, Gov. Rick Perry declared July “Jury Service Awareness Month.” We must improve these numbers to uphold the right to a trial by jury, and the support from high-profile people such as Cuban goes a long way in raising awareness of this critical civic duty.
